Northeast Edmonton Real Estate:
Community of Homesteader

Homesteader is a mature neighbourhood with a long-standing history dating back to the late 1800s. In 1875, Anglican minister Canon William Newton arrived in the Edmonton settlement and established his first church, a home, and a hospital in a location he named the Hermitage. This site was roughly ten kilometers from Fort Edmonton, situated on the south side of a ravine with a view of the North Saskatchewan River Valley to the east. Reverend Newton’s residence remained in this location for over 25 years.Throughout the years following the settlement, the Hermitage continued to be an agricultural area. The southern boundary of the area was defined by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway line along the railroad’s right-of-way. In 1960, the two cattle farms within the area were sold to a land development company. The following year, the Hermitage was incorporated into the City of Edmonton.
