Dechene was named after Joseph Miville Dechene, a pioneer from Quebec who settled in Edmonton in the late 1800s to establish a news and tobacco store. The neighbourhood is part of the West Jasper Place district, which includes other communities like Britannia-Youngstown, Canora, and High Park that were once part of the Town of Jasper Place before merging with Edmonton in 1964.
